Louie Psihoyos, staged portrait of Eric Fischl with models in studio

I took a series of photgraphs of artists done in the style of their own work. There has been much said of the psychological loading of Fischl’s work so I built a bathroom at about a 30% angle in my studio to may the viewer feel even more off balance for my portrait of the painter. Eric wasn’t used to working with nude models for his work. He usually grabbed snapshots of nudes from his trips to places like St. Tropez and painted them into his scenes once back at his New York studio. He’d painted hundreds of nudes by then but was fairly shocked at the idea of women and men taking their clothes off while you worked. “You mean you just pay them and they take their clothes off?” he asked. “I’d never get any work done if I had naked people running around my studio.”
